raid 1 seems like a good setup for a desktop pc

Standard RAID levels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
according to this article, the probability of dual disk failure is 0.0004%

one of our servers at work had a disk crash yesterday and we found out that it had been set up in raid 1 (mirror/mirroring) so there was no need to try to retrieve the data from the crashed disk (it was easy to do using linux) because all we had to do was put in a new disk and then it copied its index to the new disk and everything started up fine as if nothing had happened. sweetness.

latitude and longitude

just a quick reference, since i looked these things up due to some unknown ip addresses on our server at work.
latitude is east west location, ranging from 180°W to 180°E (which in fact are the same point =): between russia and alaska
0° latitude is in london

longitude is north south location and has the same range values as latitude 180N to 180S
0° longitude is obviously the equator

Noen har hørt på 640506 låter (siden 15 juli 2007)

i saw this on nrk's urørt tonight and i just had to laugh =):
"Noen har hørt på 640506 låter (siden 15 juli 2007), lagt opp 0 låter, skrevet 251348 innlegg og 0 anmeldelser i gjestebøkene."

when somebody there who doesn't log in does something they are called "Noen"
the "lagt opp 0 låter" part is funny too because you can't upload stuff unless you're logged in... =)

profit-generating ideas from usa

i'm on vacation in the states and am noticing all the different ways different places, like disney world, make money...
1. take your pictures with somebody or something and pay to have it developed
2. exit rides through the gift shop
3. pay to feed the dolphins or get closer to the animals than other people get to be
4. sell towels at the shamu show
5. sell cool light toys and things that appeal to children
6. sell umbrellas when it's raining
7. offer to take free pictures (and give 1 picture away for free) and then offer to sell a frame to go along with the pictures and also give the person a code they can use to go on the internet with and view and order all the other pictures (without watermark) they took of your child
8. you can pay a fee to make your otherwise expirable (2 weeks) disney world tickets unexpirable
9. rent buggies to people with children

to be continued...

1 second is 1 billion nanoseconds

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&hs=Gfw&q=convert+1+second+to+nanosecond&btnG=Search
i've been programming java today, figuring out the difference between different string handling methods and classes like string, stringbuffer and stringbuilder, and have been timing them with milliseconds and nanoseconds:
System.currentTimeMillis()
System.nanoTime()

My conclusion is that stringbuffer and stringbuilder are pretty much equal in speed, although the java api says that stringbuilder is faster in most implementations. string is the slowest at appending.

röyksopp on tv

in the last 3 days i've heard 2 different röyksopp songs in 2 different crime programs:
csi new york (about the guy who drown in his jacuzzi and it was his "fiance" who did it. he hired good looking girls to clean his house and let them live there in exchange).
some british murder show about a psychopath guy who liked to drown women and who ended up being drowned by his own father. in that show i learned about an anagram pen name called "cedric z. centiano" (a concerned citizen)

compiling source code through an ssh tunnel uses the remote resources

i'm on a new, fast, laptop and thought i could ssh to a slower remote machine where i had some source code i was going to compile, and that the laptop would be the machine whose resources (cpu) would be used during the compile, but i found out that it was the remote machine that actually was burdened with the task...now you all know =)

power for a little over an hour

i talked with a guy in baghdad, iraq, yesterday and he said that the government gives people less than 2 hours of power everyday and they never know when it will be available, there is no specific time of the day that they have power.

he also said that he thinks that the US troops don't deserve the bad rap they've been dealt by the media. they have helped him build up the building where he works.

he said most houses have generators so they have a little more power depending on how much they can afford to have the generator on... and they cook most of their food with gas (as in a gas stove)...

nokia n95 cell mobile phone review

DISLIKES:
1. when you have bluetooth off, but enable it to send a single file somewhere, it should turn off immediately after the file transfer is done

2. the battery seems to drain SUPER quickly, i have to recharge the phone every day (or did i just get really unlucky?)

3. i wish it had a place where i could attach a little string to hold on to like on the p900

4. when the battery is low the phone locked up on me and wouldn't respond to any pushing of keys. i have to take out the battery to restart it. completely lame.

5. the phone has restarted on me without warning several times

6. the phone has started going into some wierd echo-ey semi-loudspeaker mode when i make calls so i have to choose loudspeaker then choose handset to get it back to normal. i'm pissed about this piece of crap phone.

7. in bad lighting you only end up with huge (multiple MB) blurry/crappy quality pictures

8. there should be a button that goes DIRECTLY to the music player. the fastest way there is sliding the screen down, then pressing play, but it just starts playing the currently selected song. i want something that will take me to the music player main menu

9. i can't for the life of me figure out how to get the gps working...it can never find my gps position...(maybe i'm just mental?)

10. i can't seem to figure out how to make shortcuts to programs, i would like to put a couple of shortcuts on the main screen

11. in the music player menu you can't press left/up on the first selection to quickly move to the bottom of the list. completely idiotic, you have to move through the whole list to get to the bottom. you should be able to begin typing the name of the song to have the marker move to the song title instead of having to push up/down/right/left arrow...

12. usb connected to the computer doesn't charge the battery

LIKES:
1. the camera takes really nice quality pictures in good lighting.

2. the camera has a "sports" mode for pictures/subjects in motion

3. supporting a 2GB (sold seperately) memory card is great (can it support 4GB?)

4. audio files/recordings saved as wav files

5. video files saved as mp4

6. wlan

7. video calling

8. you can choose between the 2 different cameras, which one you want to take a picture with or record a video with (who would ever choose the crappier one though?)

i'm going to try and return this phone and get a sonyericsson instead, the new cybershot or something...

jeg dreit meg ut big time nå =( i currently work in companyA, but am leaving to now work for companyB. my boss owns (parts of) both of them. i was going to work for companyC, but my boss really wanted me to stick around and work for companyB. in companyA, earlier, i had a bonus system in 2005 that said i would get 50% of the bonus paid out immediately and the other 50% would be paid out in 2 years, but if i left the company then any earned bonus from 2 years ago would fall away. i should have taken that into consideration in my contract negotiation for companyB. piss!

She will be separated from the main prison population in a block that contains 12 cells, each holding two people.

It is reserved for celebrities, public officials, police officers and other high-profile inmates.

my song on the TV show Amigo

2 different parts of my ThunderCatInTheHat song were used on the norwegian tv show Amigo yesterday (fast forward to 13:30 and then again to around 20:25)!
http://straumOD.nrk.no/Amigo/2007-05-12/Amigo_12_05_07_1000_253308_20070512_183000.wmv

it was pretty crazy. granted i used some loops from apple's garageband, but both the piano AND the organ from my song are used in this show, which was how i put it together in my song, so it seems to be too big of a coincidence....i'll just think that anyways. my songs are hosted on NRK's Urørt service and this program is made by NRK, so its not a far stretch that the music guy on the show has listened to my songs...

before you use our spreadsheet, big brother needs to know even MORE!

i am going to make a list of common phrases that i say in english so i can use that as a basis for my own foreign language phrase book, to translate that all those phrases, words, etc, into the target language i want to learn. i knew that google had some kind of software for online documents. i want an online spreadsheet for this so i went to docs.google.com and there it said, funny enough:
"Welcome back, nick. Before using Google Docs & Spreadsheets, we need to know a little more about you"

so i ask, "what more could google possibly want to know aout me?" =) they know what i search for, the website i visit and all content of most of all my mails i send... =)

sunday night sparks of wisdom

we watched some church history videos tonight after the kids went to bed. i learned (or was reminded) of a cool thing:
we were watching one about the doctrine and covenants and it made me think back to the time i saw the south park episode about joseph smith and the book of mormon. it was pretty funny, but their intention was to cast doubt on its truthfulness and showed how (according to them) nobody saw the plates and that joseph smith was just making up stuff while looking into a hat. what they didn't show was a reenactment of all the times joseph smith dictated to oliver cowdery visions/prophecies he received directly from God without anything else (props) around him (and also they failed to mention the Testimony of the Three Witnesses, who claimed to have been shown the plates by the angel Moroni, and the Testimony of the Eight Witnesses who were shown the plates by Joseph Smith).

Take A Picture

We had a karaoke night at church on friday. Here's my attempt at Filter's Take A Picture.

I recorded it with my phone. It was fun just to sing again =)

4x4 stars for nissans new commercial

i usually either hate or really like commercials. the new nissan commercials where the car changes into a big cat and a spider are pretty cool. the one with the alligator and the snake isn't as cool though.

forgetful by nature

dude, i don't know how i had forgotten about the group "naughty by nature". i listened to them a lot in high school and i was just browsing around in itunes and stumbled across them and there songs brought back tons of memories of the teenager days and my friends at that time, of which i only have contact with 1 still today.

united ivan - iti soda! kom her! (sic)

hilarious. i love it when i hear something before and then understand it later!
in the norwegian movie United, ivan the ukranian soccer coach says many times "iti soda!" og gutten oversetter "kom her".
in my russian word of the day i was sounding out the russian word and i understood it!
идти (b) - come, arrive (at) <-- this is the "iti" part

hilarious and cool =)

review of the road to guantanamo

see the movie here:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-599098805530677622

the americans depicted in this movie sure use a lot of tricks to try to get people to confess things they are not guilty of:
1. telling you your friends have admitted that you were a member of al-qaeda
2. forging pictures and videos of shady images of you at some kind of rally
3. telling you your family is in danger of being deported or that something bad has happened to them or will happen to them
4. psychological and physical terror: loud music with flashing lights being played while you are chained to the floor in painful positions for long periods of time. telling you you are never going to leave or being threatened with physical violence
5. showing you or talking about phony documents saying you are connected with terror or did something bad or exploding a small thing you may have done and stating lies as facts about something you might not know about
6. pretending to be your friend or from your government and that they are trying to help you
7. cutting deals with you or making you promises if you help them

the questions i am left with after watching this film and reading and watching additional interviews of the witnesses are these:

*who are the real terrorists?

*where is the real evil/threat?

*were the US soldiers/personnel even interested in whether these prisoners were innocent or not? it seemed like maybe they were also feeling pressure to get results from their superiors and just wanted confessions to get the pressure off themselves and to give the government proof that they are right when so many US citizens and other people of the world criticize them.

*why the heck did these guys go to afghanistan when there was talk of possible
bombing/war? (but that is beside the point of the movie)

*why does rumsfield say (something to this effect) "there isn't a doubt in my mind that conditions are in accordance with international law, for the most part"?? =) why would he even mention doubt if he had first hand knowledge? and what does he mean by "for the most part"? that indicates that he DOES know something about something that ISN'T "legal"/humane.

btw i saw a funny sign in another video that said "drop bush, not bombs" =)

FYI, pakistanis and iranians are not arabs

An Arab is someone with ancestry from the nations of the Middle East or North Africa where Arabic is the primary language. Iran, where the predominant language is Farsi, is generally not considered an Arab nation.

60 minutes - brain man + nucular

60 minutes sure was a treat tonight. first there was a bit on an amazing guy nicknamed "brainman". he really showed a glimpse of our potential as living beings/spirits, what we're capable of doing/knowing. his name is Daniel Tammet. he recited pi to like the 22,514 th place. it took him like 5 hours and he made no mistakes. he sees numbers as colors/shapes.

the last piece was andy rooney's, talking about president bush, pointing out which parts of his speeches weren't his words, obviously written by some one else, everything except the word "nuclear" (bush pronounces as "nucular"). rooney proposed that the author's name should be displayed as a subtitle saying "the words you heard president bush speak, were not his own words, they were written by the white house staff...everything except the word nucular."

post-for-post-based private/public option for blogger (blogspot.com)

i want my blog to be public so others can read it, but i also would like to decide that a certain post could be private in the case that i write about my family or just personal stuff that i just don't want the public to read. (a lá the private/public option in flickr)..

has the fox been flocked?

i'm using/testing flock right now and so far it does everything that firefox does (its based on firefox) except support for:
google session sync
del.icio.us (delicious) plugin

but i can right click on stuff and blog it directly, whereas google's plugin for firefox that does something similar (but ironically in a more difficult way), doesn't work with beta blogger, i get an error cannot log in or username is not correct, type error... =( so flock seems promising, but will they stay as secure as firefox (or do they just build on top of firefox with every release of firefox?)?

how i put an image at the top of this blogger blog

(this is how it looked before i removed it.) go to your control panel > Template > Edit HTML > then scroll down to where you see this:
